Bonding Jumper Water Heater

Most electricians automatically bond the cold water line but do not ensure that the cold and the hot water lines are metallically interconnected through mixing valves in the plumbing fixtures.

Some local codes require a unique fitting on water heaters connected with copper pipes known as a bonding wire. The jumper protects the technician from becoming energized by improper current on the system ground by forcing the current to go through it. Some judgment must be exercised for each installation. Also a jumper should be on the pressure reducer valve for the same reason.

It is not required by the national electrical code but many plumbers will install a bonding wire even when it is not required. The blackburn water heater grounding kit comes with two brass ground clamps. Kit includes two brass ground clamps and copper conductor. This is a requirement by code in new jersey and some other local codes across the country.

Bonding jumpers shall be of copper or other corrosion resistant material have approved clamping devices and be of the correct wire gauge for the service installed. If it cannot reasonably be concluded that the hot and cold water pipes are reliably interconnected an electrical bonding jumper is required to ensure that this connection is made. This bonding jumper is sized using the same section and table used for the grounding electrode conductor for the service. If this jumper wire is not present or is not properly connected on either side of the water meter or only the street side when the water pipes are pex or similar materials or is not installed with approved materials mark as rre. The bonding wire can redirect a small electrical current that passes through the copper piping to the steel fittings of the water heater.
